Question – Who or What are the LIONS?

Answer – A Football or a Rugby Club Possible but Incorrect

We are a group of local men and women with an interest in helping our local community. The club was started in 1974 and since then we have raised and distributed well over £150,000, to local Charities and local good causes. In the last 10 years a sum of £80,000 has be raise and distributed to these causes. We are part of Lions Clubs International, which has 1.5 million members world wide, operating in 178 countries.

There are over 1,000 Lions based in the North West. We at Chorley Lions take our local responsibility seriously and are dedicated in raising funds to assist our local community. However we also have a social side. Our income is derived from many sources- street collections in Chorley Town Centre, with the aid of a barrel organ- Charity Stall, collections in our local Supermarkets and the two main fundraisers, the Swimarathon and the Annual Bonfire held in November on Astley Park. There have been many beneficiaries of the money raised from the Swimarathon e.g. North West Air Ambulance, St. Catherine’s Hospice and Derian House.

The profits from the Bonfire are distributed at Christmas to those in need within the Borough of Chorley. On the social side we have visited the House of Commons, several breweries, bakeries, Fire Brigade training centre, NW Air Ambulance at Blackpool etc. In addition there have been occasional lunches and dinners. Several members enjoy limited sporting activities such as Crown Green Bowls and Golf whilst other members are interested in Old forms of transport.

As part of Lions Clubs International we support overseas projects through our own Charities, making Major Donations to assist those persons caught up in natural disasters such as the South East Asia Tsunami, the Storms in New Orleans and Earthquakes in India/Pakistan. We also support ongoing projects such as providing Water Wells in the Third World and helping to prevent river blindness in Africa.

We only have 13 active members and if you would like to join, (we are always on the look out for new members,) Contact Chorley Lions via Chorley Borough Council on 01257 515151 and ask for a Chorley Lions contact. OR attend one of our meetings.

These are held on the FIRST and THIRD WEDNESDAYS, of the month, venue THE DRESSERS ARMS PUB, Briers Brow Wheelton which is on the Chorley Blackburn Road. At The Dresser's we have a room reserved for Chorley Lions on Meeting Nights. Meetings start @ 20.00 hrs.

We consider ourselves to be a BEACON of HOPE, because, we are there to assist when all approaches made through other avenues have not been available.
