The Chorley Smile Awards
A huge public thank you was made to all those people, community groups and businesses who go the extra mile to make Chorley Smile.
After a very successful introduction in 2008, the Chorley Smile Awards were back for the second time and Chorley Council was inundated with the names of those people who you thought deserved a pat on the back for the incredible work they do for local people.
All those shortlisted for all nine categories were invited along to the Chorley Smile Picnic in the Park held in Astley Park for the winners to be announced at a special awards ceremony.
Chorley's community heroes were welcomed with cheers and rapturous applause by hundreds of people who turned out for the event, and there were tears of joy and pride as the stories of those who have gone the extra mile to help others or improve their community were read out to the crowds.
The quality of nominations received again this year was phenomenal, it was so difficult to draw up a shortlist never mind pick a winner.
Every one who was shortlisted deserved an award which is why it was important they received public recognition at the Picnic in the Park.
The Awards are our way of saying 'thank-you' to those who go the extra mile and make Chorley Smile.
Marjorie Darbyshire and Irene Bolton from Chorley Swimming Club won the Pride of Chorley Award having been chosen from the winners of all nine categories.
They have run the club by themselves for the last 42 years, on a voluntary basis, keeping costs low and have taught thousands of children to swim over the years and have even produced Olympic swimmers.
