Smile - it's Picnic time

FAMILIES from across Chorley are being urged to make a date in their diary for the Chorley Smile Picnic in the Park.

Following the amazing success last year of the first ever Picnic held in Astley Park when around 4,000 people enjoyed an afternoon of summer sun and fantastic fun with activities and entertainment, it is back by popular demand.

And this year it will be held on Sunday, July 4 from noon to 5pm.

The Picnic in the Park, organised by Chorley Council, promises to be yet another fabulous event to which everyone is invited.

Councillor John Walker, Chorley Council's Executive Member for People, said: "Plans are already well underway to ensure this year's Picnic is a huge success.

"We want to invite whole families to come along to Astley Park, to bring a picnic, relax in the magnificent surroundings and enjoy all the entertainment and activities that are being put on free of charge."

The highlight of the day will be the official presentation ceremony of the Chorley Smile Awards which rewards those individuals, community groups and businesses that other people believe go that extra mile to make Chorley Smile.

There's still time to nominate those who you think deserve this special award for the work they do for local people – forms are available from the Council's Civic Offices on Union Street or print one off from www.chorley.gov.uk/smileawards. They must be completed and returned to the Council by May 21, 2010.

There will also be special celebrities for the youngsters which organisers are keeping under wraps for the time being.

And there will be a range of sports activities for children and sports activities which the older generation can also take part in.

Astley Hall will be open for visitors to look round its exhibitions, as will the Coach House and the very popular Pets Corner, managed by the Brothers of Charity Services will be bringing in some weird and wonderful animals as well as the usual animals for people to go along and have a look at.

Coun Walker added: "Because we are expecting thousands of people to come along on the day, we would urge people to take advantage of the free car parks in Chorley town centre and then walk through the Park to Pets Corner, Astley Hall and the Walled Garden.

"It should be a fantastic day out for people of all ages to enjoy."
