More Affordable Homes For Families
FAMILIES and young people looking to buy their own home are being given a helping hand onto the property ladder thanks to a rise in affordable homes across the borough.
The increase in homes, available to rent or buy at low cost, has more than doubled in the last 12 months, with Chorley Council looking to provide even more.
The Council has smashed its Government set to target to provide 50 new affordable homes providing double that since April last year.
Councillor Peter Malpas, Chorley Council's Executive Member (Business), said: "It's important that families and young people who want to live in their own home can afford to do so.
"We know how difficult it can be to make that first step onto the property ladder which is why we have looked a every way possible to provide affordable homes for people on low incomes."
In the last 12 months the council has provided 107 affordable homes – bucking the national trend, which has seen other authorities struggle to meet their targets.
As well as properties to buy, the council has helped increased the number of homes available for social rent, both through refurbishment and new house building developments.
Many of the homes provided have been through the Governments Home-Buy Direct Scheme, which includes a range of affordable equity loan or shared ownership options arranged between the occupier and Plumlife - the appointed Home-Buy Agents for Lancashire.
"We've have been working closely with housing associations and property developers to attract funding, which can be put towards building new affordable homes," said Councillor Malpas
"There's still more work to be done and we will continue to provide as many affordable homes as we can.
"I would encourage people who are struggling to afford their first home, or looking for social rented property to contact us on 01257 515151 and see what help is available."
