Craft market boost
TRADERS at Chorley market have reported a welcome boost to business since measures were introduced to revitalise the monthly farmers' and craft markets.
Two new traders have taken up stalls and regular stallholders have reported an increase in trade.
Chorley Council introduced free rent for stalls at the monthly Farmers' Market and for those traders on the Covered Market who don't usually set up on Thursdays.
Councillor Peter Malpas, Chorley Council's Executive Member for Partnerships and Planning said: "The traders suffered a difficult winter because of the bad weather and in order to help we came up with this idea of offering free stalls at the monthly farmers' and craft markets.
"We are delighted that it has resulted in new traders joining Chorley market in addition to others opening up who hadn't previously done so on Thursdays. We think this has added to the atmosphere and improved the whole experience for shoppers and traders alike."
Long-standing stall holder John Brennand, who sells ladies wear, said it was a good idea and he had enjoyed brisk trade, and jewellery stall holder Beverley Wales reported it was one of her busiest days.
Artist Hilary Fisher from Whittle-le-Woods was on the market for the first time in more than four years.
"I used to come here when the craft market first opened which was about 10 years ago but I had to give up because of health problems.
"However, I had seen it advertised and thought I would come along. I have enjoyed it, everyone has shown so much interest. It is a good atmosphere. I'll certainly be back next month."
Also new to the market is Fay Jones from Leyland who runs Mummy Cupcake and sells textile gifts and homeware.
She said: "I've been making and selling these things for a couple of years now but this is the first time I've been on Chorley market. I am really enjoying it, the other stallholders are really friendly and helpful. I will definitely come back."
Tracy Carter who makes glass jewellery and stained glass said she had been a regular on the Thursday markets for about four years.
"I came to Chorley because it's local to me, I live in Euxton. When I first started, craft markets seemed to have had their day but now they seem to be starting to come back and it's particularly good when it's the farmers' market and craft market."
Free rent will also be offered for the next farmers' market and craft and coffee morning on Thursday July 15.
For more information or if you would like to set up a stall on the farmers' market, which is held on the third Thursday of the month, contact Chorley Council on 01257 515151.
