Emergencies

PCSOs

Unforeseen accidents and incidents can occur and Chorley Council's emergency planning team need to make sure we can deal with them if they do.

What is an emergency? An emergency is defined as "any event or situation which threatens serious damage to human welfare in the UK, the environment in the UK, or war or terrorism which threatens serious damage to the security of the UK".

Emergency planning is producing plans and preparing a response to an emergency whether it is a disruption or major incident. It might be an environmental emergency, such as flooding, or a result of technology failure or industrial emergencies such as the Buncefield oil fire.

When these things happen, a number of different agencies get involved, such as the Police, Fire and Ambulance Service, but they are supported in the immediate and longer-term by a whole host of other agencies, including the Council, health sector, utility companies and voluntary organisations.

Plans

We have specific plans in place to help us to deal with flooding, release of chemicals, radiation, oil pollution, widespread food poisoning, evacuation, Avian Influenza and of course Pandemic Flu. In conjunction with Lancashire County Council, the Health Authorities, the 'blue light' services and voluntary organisations. Others are written specifically for Chorley Council. The Lancashire Resilience Forum and Chorley Council continue to to review, test, validate and update all of our emergency plans regularly. For more information click here.

Support

Chorley Borough Council would support people in the borough to respond to and recover from any emergency. We have emergency plans in place to ensure a speedy response to a major emergency or disaster in conjunction with the emergency services.

Information

We also work to ensure the community has the information it needs, when it needs it. We have a range of information and leaflets available:

Coping with a major incident - advice from the Department for Health on how you might feel after an incident and where to obtain help.

Flooding - advice before and after flooding.
