Recycling, Rubbish and Waste
Emptying bins is one of our main jobs and we owe a big thank you to our residents who are recycling almost half of all our waste.
Do it online
You can report a missed bin collection or order new boxes and bins here.
How often does my bin get emptied?
We call at your property every week - we just collect different bins on different weeks.
We will collect normal household rubbish one week (your green refuse bin) and empty your recycling and garden waste (blue and brown bin and green box) the following week.
When will my bins get emptied?
If you're not sure what bin to put out when use our collection day search.
Bins are emptied from 7am so make sure your bin is out by then.
What bins and containers should I have?
Each household will have:
- A green wheelie bin is used to collect waste that cannot be recycled - this is taken to landfill sites
- A brown wheelie bin for garden waste
- A blue wheelie bin for plastics, cans and glass. This includes a black inner pod for paper
- A green box for cardboard
- A red bag for textiles (although we recommend residents support local charity shops with unwanted clothes etc)
A small number of households aren't suitable for wheeled bins so will have different collection containers.
Shredded paper
We've noticed a problem with shredded paper blowing about following collections - if you use your black pod to recycle it please damp it down to stop it blowing away. Alternatively, you can put it in your brown bin in between layers of garden waste, which also stops it blowing away.
Does the Council collect large items?
We have special collections for bulky items - click here for more information. You could also visit one of the local household waste disposal sites.
Where can I find recycling collection sites?
There are more than a dozen recycling banks across the borough.
How much are we recycling?
Thanks to our residents we are now recycling almost half of all our waste. It's important that we continue to recycle more to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill sites. Lancashire is very short of landfill space and if we don't recycle we will have to find new sites.
Recycling is also very important to conserve raw materials and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Where can I find more information?
We have lots of information on this website but you can email us or contact us on 01257 515355. You can also view the Lancashire Municipal Waste Management Strategy.
Environmental Education programme
An innovative programme for primary schools to help children and the whole school community think differently about waste has been developed by the Environmental Education team at Global Renewables Ltd. The team will go into schools to deliver a choice of fun, hands on and practical sessions focused on reduce, re-use and recycle.
