When last year's Chorley Flower Show was taken online due to the covid pandemic, Chorley Council launched a competition for children to Design a Garden to help encourage young gardeners to get involved. These designs will become a reality at this year's live event.
Entrants from two age categories, were asked to be as creative as they could to design a garden using their own theme and describe it in their own words, to include what plants and features the garden would include.
Councillor Peter Wilson, Deputy Leader of Chorley Council said "Last year we still wanted to provide something fun for people to do and to encourage young gardeners despite the show being online. It's fantastic to see young people getting involved with the Chorley Flower Show. Congratulations our competition winners, we look forward to seeing their fabulous designs become a reality at this year's live show."
Winner of the 5-11 age (primary schools) category, Grace Daniels submitted her Rainbow Flower Garden design and said that it was "to remember all the good work people have done at this time like the NHS, shopkeepers, binmen and normal people." Grace added with her entry "I thought rainbow colours would be a nice thing to remember this time because everyone put rainbows up in their windows to show that everything will get better soon. I also like seeing flowers when we go for walks because they are always so pretty. I choose stones because I like the stones on a path we always walk on."
Isobel Ashworth, winner of the 12-16 year old (secondary school) category submitted her Garden of Colours design along with the following words: "This garden is based on the three primary colours and the fact that using these colours you can make all the other colours. The garden goes 'back to basics' as it is based on the three primary colours and transports us back in time when people used berries and flowers to make paints."
Winners will receive tickets for the 2021 Chorley Flower Show for themselves and their family to see their fantastic designs, which will be created with the help of local landscaping and garden design company, Homescapes of Chorley.
Homescapes of Chorley have met with the competition winners to discuss creation of their garden designs that will be in bloom at the Chorley Flower Show.
